John 4:1-27

The disciples were surprised to find Jesus speaking with the woman at the well for a number of reasons:

1. She was a Samaritan (half Jewish and half Gentile)
2. She was a woman
3. She had a questionable past.

Any one of these factors would have disqualified her from speaking with a "righteous" Jewish man, but Jesus broke down all the traditional barriers to accept her as she was and gave her a fresh start in life. In doing this, Jesus demonstrated God's love for all who have been rejected or condemned. This must be a great source of encouragement to us. God still what we have done in the past, God still offers us his unconditional acceptance in Jesus. With his powerful help, nothing can stand in the way of our salvation.

Jesus's conversation with the Samaritan woman reveals his commitment to his heavenly Father's purpose and his own desire to bring the women to eternal life. Jesus's consuming passion was to save the lost (Luke 15:19-10, Daniel 12:3, James 5:20), a goal of critical importance. We must follow Jesus's example. All around us people are ready to hear God's Word; We must find ways to speak to them about their spiritual need and about Jesus, who is the only one that can meet that need.

John 4:14

"but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The "water" given by Jesus means spiritual life (Isaiah 12:3). To share in this living water one must continue to "drink" (John 7:37). This act of drinking is not a single event, but rather a progressive or repeated drinking. Drinking the water of life requires regular communion with the source of the living water, Jesus Christ himself. No one can continue to drink the water of life if he or she becomes separated from the source. If we become separated from the Source we will become like springs without water (2 Peter 2:17).

Bible Verse

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven, we thank you for sending down powers from on high into our earthly life. We thank you for sending us a higher nature in which we can live for others because we are living by what we receive from you. May we be simple, childlike, and trusting. When anyone despairs of himself, show him the way to the Savior so that he can find trust. Show to us the way of trust, trust for ourselves and for all people, because it is your will for all to receive help. Amen.
