 JOHN CHAPTER 1

JOHN 1:1-5 (ESV)

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it".

The same God who created the universe (1:3) is able to create new life within us. The light of life that exposes and drives a way the darkness of the human race (1:4-5) is the same light that brightens the dark corners of our world. This true Light of the World nd source of all life is our source of Spiritual Growth. 

THE WORD

John begins his Gospel by calling Jesus "The Word". In using this to describe Jesus Christ, John presents him as the personal Word of God and indicates that in these last days God has spoken to us through his Son (Hebrews 1:1-3). Scripture declares that Jesus Christ is the manifold wisdom of God (Colossians 2:2-3) and the perfect revelation of the nature of God (Colossians 2:9). Just as a person's words reveal his or heart and mind, Christ as the Word reveals the heart and mind of God. 

John gives us a few characteristics of Jesus Christ as "the Word".

1. The Word's relation to the Father. (a) Christ was pre-existent with God before the creation of the world. He was a person existing from eternity, distinct from but in eternal fellowship with God. (b) Christ was Divine ("the Word was God"), having the same nature and essence of the Father (see Colossians 2:9).
2. The Word's relation to the world. It was through Jesus Christ that God the Father created and sustains the world (Colossians 1:16, Hebrews 1:2)
3. The Word's relation to humanity. "The Word became Flesh" (John 1:14). The Son of God took on human nature but without sin. This is the basic statement of the incarnation: Christ left heaven and entered the condition of human life through the gateway of human birth and became God in the Flesh.

JOHN 1:12

"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God:"

"Believed". It is important to note that John never uses the noun "belief". Yet he uses the verb "believe" 98 times. For John, saving faith is an activity, something that people do. True faith is not a static belief and trust in Jesus and his redeeming work, but a loving, self abandoning commitment that constantly draws one near to the Lord Jesus Christ in spiritual intimacy.

Dear Father in heaven, we thank you for the work you are doing. We thank you for working through people of all kinds and of all through the many hearts that know your goodness. We thank you for the great work led by the Lord Jesus, who will overcome the world with patience and with gentleness. He has overcome the world, opening the door wide for all, including the poorest of the poor, to come to you, their Father in heaven. Grant that with the light we have been given we may remain firm and true. Do not let us come into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours forever. In Jesus name, Amen.
